Background:
The AURN project focused on five thematic areas: a) Housing for the urban poor b) Women in urban development c) Environmental sustainability d) Urban management e) Institutional arrangements (and instruments) for human settlements planning Three spatial domains were chosen to carry out project activities: (a) inner-city redevelopment; (b) small town development on the metropolitan periphery; and (c) the planning and governance of mega-urban regions. Finally, three instrumental goals were defined: a) To help develop indigenous intellectual and human resources required to critically analyze the transition to an urban society; b) To develop innovative policy and programme responses; and c) To help build up the institutional capacity for effective action in solving urban problems.
